Basketball falls short in loss to No. 13 St. Thomas

Box Score After a historic upset win over the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday night, the St. Catherine University basketball team hoped it could use momentum from its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory of the season against a tough No.13-ranked University of St. Thomas squad.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't find a way to slow down the high-powered, balanced offensive attack from the Tommies in suffering a tough 80-49 MIAC loss Saturday afternoon at the Butler Center.

The Tommies were able to take advantage of their opportunities as they shot 55.2 percent from the field and got 18 points from one of the league's top players in Maggie Weiers as she was 7-of-8 from the field. Four other Tommies also reached double-digit points.

The Wildcats quickly found themselves down 13-0 in the first five minutes and couldn't find a way to recover. Gabby Zehrer (Rogers, Minn.) who was nearly unstoppable in the Wildcats' victory Wednesday continued her strong play with a team-high 16 points. She also drilled three baskets from behind the arc and shot 50 percent from the field.

LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn.) was again impressive as she scored 10 points off the bench including six from thre free-throw line, while Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) went 3-for-7 to score seven points.

Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was extremely efficient for the Wildcats as she was 3-for-5 from the field and picked up a steal, while Jenna Mistler (Austin, Texas) came up big defensively for the Wildcats with three rebounds and a game-high four steals. Sarah Manning (Page, Ariz.) led the Wildcats in rebounds with four while Kennedy Jennings (Des Moines, Iowa) added three.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 1-1 in the MIAC and 2-3 overall. The Wildcats return to action at home Monday night against St. Olaf College at 7:30 p.m. in the Butler Center.
