The St. Catherine University basketball team had a chance to pick up its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of the 2012-13 season against a Bethel University squad that was also searching for a much-needed MIAC victory.
Unfortunately, the Royals pulled away late in the second half to hand the Wildcats a 57-42 loss Wednesday evening in Arden Hills, Minn.
Despite holding Bethel to just seven offensive rebounds all night, St. Catherine was haunted by perimeter shooting from its opponent for the second-straight game as the Royals scored 30 points from behind the arc.
The Royals didn't make a single two-point shot in the first half to take a 24-16 lead into the break, but the Wildcats bounced back and opened up the second half with eight quick points to pull within two early.
Sarina Baker (Plymouth, Minn.) hit a 3-pointer at the 15:28 mark to make it 28-27, but that's as close as the Wildcats would make it. The Royals used an 11-0 run to take a 14-point lead with 9:40 to play and never looked back en route to victory.
For the second game in a row, the Wildcats received a strong performance from junior
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) to lead the offensive attack. She had a team-high 11 points and five assists, while also pulling in eight rebounds.
Cynthia Cowan (Elgin, Texas) contributed 10 points and led the Wildcats in rebounds (9), while Baker put up nine points, eight boards and four steals.
Rachel Parupsky carried the Royals to their first MIAC victory with 15 points, eight rebounds and an impressive seven blocks, while Sydney Schultz and Lexi Freisen each entered double digits in scoring.
After three-straight roads games, the Wildcats return home to take on a tough Gustavus Adolphus College squad that is 8-1 in the MIAC, Saturday afternoon at the Bulter Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
