Heading into a tough match up against Saint Mary's University, the St. Catherine Unviersity basketball team knew it would have to be at its best for the entire game in order to pick up a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win.
Despite a great first half for the Wildcats, the Cardinals were able to use a 16-2 on the opening six minutes of the second half to hand the Wildcats a 68-40 loss, Saturday afternoon at the
Butler Center.
In the first half, the Wildcats shot 45.5 percent and held the Cardinals to just 23.7 from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc, but weren't able to duplicate those results in the game's final 20 minutes.
The Wildcats opened up the game with the first points and held a six-point led twice in the first 15 minutes of play. After the Wildcats went up 17-11, the Cardinals used a 14-4 run at the end of the first half to take a 25-21 lead into the break.
The Cardinals would then score the opening points on free throws in the second and went on a 16-2 run in the opening six minutes to put a Wildcat comeback out of reach.
Sarah Mong (Page, Ariz.) led the way with eight points for the Wildcats and shot 50 percent from the field.
Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove heights, Minn.) also scored eight for the Wildcats and had a team-high two steals and two assists.
Mary Neumann (Duluth, Minn.) scored seven points and pulled in a team-best seven rebounds, while
Cynthia Cowan (Elgin, Texas) also had seven boards.
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) and
Amanda Padilla (Oxnard, Calif.) had six points a piece.
The Cardinals were led by one of the league's top scorers, Jamie Stefely, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Jessica Thone had a game-high 13 points.
The Wildcats will take a few days off before hitting the road to take on Augsburg College, Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Minneapolis.
