Rooney scores hat-trick as hockey beats Concordia 4-3

Cassie Rooney
The Wildcats traveled to Moorhead, Minnesota Friday evening to take on conference foe Concordia College.  St. Kate's came into tonight's game in sixth place in the MIAC, while the Cobbers were alone in second place.

St. Kate's senior forward, Cassie Rooney was the first to light the lamp on an unassisted goal at the 4:16 mark in the first period.  Concordia would catch fire three minutes later and finish the first period with three consecutive goals, the last of which was short handed.

The Wildcats would regroup during the intermission and elevated their game. St. Kate's goalie Samantha Geissler would come up with 33 saves in the game (24 in the 2nd and 3rd periods).  The offense would get things going in the second period as well.  Hallie Paschke would find the net on assist from Kayla Clafton just over three minutes into the second period on a power play goal.  Rooney would knot things up at three apiece with two minutes left in the period on an even strength goal, with Clafton collecting her second assist of the night.

The third period was more of the same as Geissler kept the Cobbers scoreless and Rooney scored the game-winner, and her third of the night, completing her first hat-trick of the season with Kelsey Abrahamson on the assist.

After the game, head coach Brad Marshall was pleased with the outcome and effort, "We're getting different people to step up and contribute. Last weekend it was three freshmen, tonight our seniors played great. Sam made some key saves and we buried our chances. They had us bottled up for a bit, but a lot of their shots were coming from outside. Concordia is a good team, I'm proud of the way we batled back."

The hockey team will stay in Moorhead tonight to face Concordia again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
