High-powered Cobber offense proves too much as Wildcats suffer 82-49 loss

Box Score
After a tough road loss to St. Olaf College on Wednesday evening, things weren't going to get any easier for the St. Catherine University basketball team as it faced a Concordia College squad that boasts three players in the top-15 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) scoring so far this season.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't rise to the difficult challenge as they fell 82-49 to the Cobbers, Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena.

Despite struggling to pulling in rebounds against a Cobber team with three players listed over the 6'0” mark, the Wildcats had an MIAC season-best day from 3-point range as they shot 40 percent.

Cynthia Cowan (Elgin, Texas) knocked down a trio of 3-pointers en route to a career-high and game-high 17 point performance. The first-year was 7-for-11 from the field and had just two turnovers on the day.

After Sarina Baker (Plymouth, Minn.) used an early 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead in the opening minute of play, the Cobbers would use a 15-2 run in just five minutes time to take an early 17-5 lead.

The Cobbers never looked back as they went into halftime up 38-26. Both teams would exchange 3-pointers to open the second half, but the Cobbers would continue to extend their lead despite the Wildcats' best efforts to chip away points.

Baker finished the game as the second-leading Wildcat scorer with 14 points, while Jenna Mistler (Austin, Texas) had a game-high seven assists and led the Wildcats in rebounds (5).

League-leading scorer Tricia Sorensen had 13 points to lead a Concordia squad that sank nine 3-point shots and allowed the Wildcats just seven offensive rebounds. Olivia Johnson came off the bench for the Cobbers to score nine points and was 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line.

With the loss, the Wildcats head into the holiday break 1-6 on the season and 0-5 in the conference. The Wildcats open up with a non-conference contest against Nebraska Wesleyan University at the Butler Center on Saturday, Dec. 29, for a 3 p.m. game.

MIAC play resumes Wednesday, Jan. 2, as the Wildcats will host Augsburg College at the Butler Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
