After a tough loss to Carleton College on Wednesday evening, the St. Catherine University basketball team faced another early-season challenge of taking on an undefeated Saint Mary's University on the road just three days later in an always important Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they couldn't find a way to score against a defensively strong Cardinal squad, falling 40-22 in a low-scoring affair, Saturday afternoon in Winona, Minn.
Both teams shot under 30 percent in the game, but the Wildcats couldn't find an answer for the strong Cardinal defense that managed 18 steals and blocked five Wildcat shots.
Junior
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) led the way for the Wildcats with seven points, while Sarah Mong (Page, Ariz.) added five points, 10 boards and two steals.
Alyssa Buchner (Coon Rapids, Minn.) came off the bench for the Wildcats and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the field. She was the third-leading scorer for the Wildcats on the day.
Defensively, the Wildcats managed nine steals and pulled in 30 rebounds off Cardinal shots.
Courtney Eurle recorded a double-double for the Cardinals, scoring 11 points and pulling in 11 rebounds.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 1-3 on the season and will have just one day's rest before returning to action, Monday evening at the
Butler Center. The Wildcats will take on a Macalester College squad that is 0-2 in MIAC play.
