Volleyball opens season with a pair of wins

The Wildcats got the season off to a great start at the UW Stevens Point tournament on Friday afternoon.  St. Kate's swept both Ripon and UM Morris 3-0 in the first day of play to get the season off to a 2-0 start.  The Wildcats face off against host Stevens Point and North Central College in the second day of action.

Taking to the floor against UM Morris first, the Wildcats won by a score of 25-20, 25-15, and 25-18.  Against Ripon the Wildcats prevailed by a score of 28-26, 25-14, 25-21.

Returners Kayla Sis, Brittni Wangerin, and Marie O'Neil picked up the offensive attack right where they left off last season.  Sis totaled 17 kills combined in the two games, while Wangerin had 20 kills and O'Neil had 15.  Newcomer Kelsey Wirtanen chipped in with 7 kills and 11 digs against Morris.  Incoming setters Jordyn Wentland and Ashley Kahlow both saw significant playing time, compiling 34 and 30 set assists, respectively.

Coach Phelps was pleased with the teams ability to close out their opponents in straight sets.  While the Wildcats were tested in their first game against Ripon, they responded with a strong second game and kept their focus to win the third set and make it a clean sweep on the day.
