The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead at home Saturday against Augsburg. With SCU leading by as much as 9 points midway through the half, Augsburg began chipping away. When the halftime buzzer sounded, the score was 27-28 Auggies.
The second half was almost a carbon-copy of the first, with St. Kate's getting out to a 7 point lead at 12:21 and seeing that lead dwindle as time slipped away.
With 8 seconds remaining in the game, senior
Quinn Halverson was fouled as the Wildcats led 64-62. She made the first free throw making the lead 3 points. The second free throw missed and Augsburg nabbed the rebound. Just three seconds later, Augsburg tied the score with a clutch 3 point shot by Tracee Shrank. Regulation ended all square at 65-65.
In the overtime period the seniors rose to the occasion and stole the show.
Sonja Ellingson scored 4 points and pulled down 2 rebounds,
Laura Kalbfell added 2 points and 2 boards and Halverson netted 2 points and an assist.
SCU outscored Augsburg 8-6 in overtime, winning 73-71. Few teams have the opportunity to finish their season with a win. Congrats to the Wildcats and their seniors on a season filled with heart, effort and pride.
