The St. Kate's softball team traveled to St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon, losing both games of a doubleheader. The Cardinals won game one 3-0 and game two 7-1.
Kayla Bergerson pitched well in game one, recording 3 strikeouts in 6 innings of work while allowing 2 earned runs on 12 hits. Unfortunately, the Wildcat offense could not get the spark it needed to overcome the Cardinals' two runs in the third inning and their final run in the fourth inning, as they finished the game 3-0.
St. Kate's got down 1-0 after the first inning of game two, but earned the run back the following inning. Kelsey Adair singled down the left field line and then advanced to third off of a double by Ann Schmitz. Ashley Matthys flied out to left field to bring Adair across home plate with the sacrifice fly and tie the score 1-1.
But mistakes proved to be the factor down the stretch, as St. Mary's took advantage of errors, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning to take the 7-1 win.
The losses put the Wildcats at 4-16 in the MIAC and 7-26 overall. St. Kate's plays their final home games on Saturday, May 1st with a doubleheader against Hamline starting at 1:00 p.m.
