Volleyball splits opening matches

The St. Kate's opened their 2009 season by hosting a pair of games. The Wildcats dropped their season opener to Luther College 3-2 before rebounding to defeat Martin Luther College 3-2.

Against Luther the Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead winning the first game 25-23. They then worked overtime to pick up an exciting 30-28 win to take game two. Unfortunately the team was unable to carry that momentum into the third and fourth games, falling 25-14 and 25-17. In the decisive fifth game the Wildcats rally came up short and Luther escaped with a 15-10 win.

In the match three Wildcats reached double digits in kills. Maria Hoffman led the way with 11 kills, Megan Ahlbrecht and Kayla Sis had ten kills each. Nicole Neumann played strong in the back row with 31 digs, and newcomer Racquel Reker led the team with .412 hitting percentage.

Against Martin Luther the Wildcats came out hitting and never let up. St. Kate's won 25-16, 25-19 and 25-22. Hoffman again led the team's offensive attack. She recorded 14 kills, on twenty attempts for an amazing .650 hitting percentage.

Coach Hess was pleased with the way her team started noting that "though we should've found a way to win that first game, we had a lot of good things happen in both matches. What we learned today will only help us as we continue to come together as a team and progress over the next few weeks."

The Wildcats return to action on September 4th and 5th when they compete at the Sugar Loaf Classic in Winona.
