NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The St. Catherine University soccer team dropped a 2-0 MIAC decision to Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at Bell Field. The loss moved the Wildcats to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Carleton opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Isabelle Connolly headed a cross from Lily Shure into the right side of the net to put the Knights ahead 1-0.
St. Catherine responded with its best stretch of offensive pressure midway through the opening half. The Wildcats earned four corner kicks in less than two minutes and generated four shots during the sequence.
Ali Owens put an attempt on frame in the 21st minute, while
Bella Meier,
Charlotte Willems and
Lydia Benson also created chances as St. Kate's searched for the equalizer.
The Knights carried the one-goal advantage into halftime before striking just 20 seconds into the second half. Zoe Silver intercepted a pass back toward goal, worked around the goalkeeper and finished into the open net to extend Carleton's lead to 2-0.
St. Catherine continued to battle but was limited to one second-half shot.
Ari Douvier produced the Wildcats' best opportunity after the break in the 75th minute, putting an attempt on goal that was stopped by Carleton goalkeeper Avery Trapp.
The Wildcats finished with six shots and five corner kicks, while Carleton recorded 13 shots and five corners. Owens and Douvier accounted for St. Catherine's two shots on goal, while Benson led the Wildcats with two total attempts.
In goal,
Brianna Valdez played all 90 minutes for St. Catherine and made four saves.
St. Kate's travels to Superior, Wisconsin on Wednesday for a 7 pm non-conference game against Wisconsin-Superior. They return to St. Paul on Saturday, September 26 hosting Saint Benedict.
