Wildcats sweep Bennies, 7-0

SARTELL, Minn. -- St. Catherine University put together a dominant performance Saturday, sweeping College of Saint Benedict 7-0 in MIAC action at STA-FIT.

The Wildcats controlled the match from the start, taking all three doubles flights to grab early momentum before finishing off the sweep with six straight singles wins. St. Kate's improved to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Faith Simon and Ashley King set the tone at No. 1 doubles with a 6-2 win over Ellie Huber and Marie Labenski. Ryanna Steinhaus and Marie Pelletier matched that score with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, Melanie Gravdahl and Liliana Holmberg battled through a tight matchup and came away with a 7-6 (7-5) win.

In singles play, Simon was sharp at the top spot, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win over Huber at No. 1. Holmberg followed with a strong 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at No. 2, while Pelletier added a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3.

King earned a solid straight-set win at No. 4, topping Lila Collins 7-5, 6-2. The most dramatic finish of the day came at No. 5, where Steinhaus rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Marie Labenski 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9). Gravdahl closed out the sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.

St. Kate's has two regular season matches remaining traveling to University of Northwestern in St. Paul on Tuesday, April 21 before hosting Hamline University on Thursday, April 23 at home. Playoffs are set to begin Tuesday, April 28 with the Wildcats clinching a spot for the 14th time and third consecutive appearance.
