Wildcats drop two matches to Central, Wartburg

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University volleyball team finished Saturday with a pair of losses at home. In the first match, The Wildcats fell to Central College 3-0 before dropping match two 3-1 to Wartburg falling to 2-5 overall. 

Mallory Johnson posted a team high 16 kills between the two matches with four blocks and scoring 18 points. Addison Preuss had 18 digs and 31 assists while Maddie Newton recorded a career high 14 digs. 

MATCH ONE | Central 3, St. Catherine 0
The first set started strong for the Wildcats going back and forth up until the final. St. Kate's held the 23-22 lead but Central forced back to back errors before sealing it at 25-23. It was the same story in set two staying within one point until the Dutch added four points in a row to seal it at 25-20. Central maintained control throughout the third and final set with a 15 point lead at 24-9. The Wildcats didn't give up though, adding three more points before the set ended at 25-12 following a service error for the purple and gold. 

MATCH TWO | Wartburg 3, St. Catherine 1
The Wartburg Knights came out strong getting a 6-1 lead in the opening set and maintaining the momentum to claim set one 25-11. The Wildcats performance in set two proved to on the right track but Wartburg dominated at the front row getting up 23-15. St. Kate's attempted to inch back with Alexa Carlstrom at the service line but the Knights were able to take the set at 25-20 after a pair of attack errors. Set three was a different story as Maneeje Mostaghimi served the Wildcats to six straight points. The Knights tried to make a comeback but the Wildcats were able to take the set at 25-21. 

Set four started in favor of the Wildcats again but the Knights weren't interested in playing a fifth set. After knotting it at 10-10, St. Kate's wasn't able to keep up and Wartburg grabbed the match with a 25-19 set win. 

St. Kate's is home again on Tuesday, September 9 hosting Wisconsin Stout at 7 pm.
