RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- The St. Catherine tennis team opened regular season competition on Saturday in River Falls, Wisconsin for a triangular with the Falcons and the Yellowjackets from the University of Wisconsin, Superior. St. Kate's defeated Wisconsin-River Falls 5-2 before falling to Wisconsin-Superior 4-3.
MATCH ONE | St. Catherine 5, Wis. River Falls 2
St. Catherine tennis rolled past Wisconsin–River Falls with a strong all-around effort, sweeping doubles and taking four of six singles matches.
Faith Simon and Ashley King led the way, teaming up for a 6–0 win at No. 1 doubles before adding straight-set singles victories. Ryanna Steinhaus and Melanie Gravdahl battled back for three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6, while Marie Pelletier and Liliana Holmberg fell in hard-fought matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
MATCH TWO | Wis. Superior 4, St. Catherine 3
St. Catherine battled hard against Wis. Superior, but the Yellowjackets pulled out the win in a tight match.
The Wildcats struck early in doubles, with Faith Simon and Ashley King winning 6–3 at No. 1 and Marie Pelletier and Ryanna Steinhaus adding a 6–4 victory at No. 2. King stayed strong in singles with a 6–4, 6–4 win at No. 4, while Steinhaus fought for a gritty 7–6, 6–0 result at No. 5.
UW–Superior went on to take four singles matches, including two in third-set tiebreaks, to clinch the overall team victory.
