ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University basketball team secured a conference sweep of the St. Olaf College Oles on Saturday in Northfield. The 70-54 win over the Oles puts St. Kate's at 10-9 on the season with a 5-7 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic College (MIAC) record.
Pacing the Wildcats was sophomore
Hattie Fox with 14 points, six boards and three assists.
Rachel Randleman had her season high performance shooting 3-5 from the beyond arch adding five boards while shooting 100 percent from the charity line.
Emme Golembiewski led defensively posting four blocks, seven rebounds while chipping in nine points.
The quarter was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging leads. The quarter saw multiple turnovers and missed shots from both sides, with key contributions from Randleman, who hit a clutch three-pointer late in the quarter. Despite a late jumper from Chloee Smith putting the opposition back in front, St. Kate's finished strong with a three-pointer from Randleman, leaving the score at Wildcats 12, the opposition 13 as the quarter ended.
St. Kate's took control in the second quarter with a strong defensive and offensive showing. After a couple of turnovers and missed shots early, Fox hit a key three-pointer to give the Wildcats the lead. The team built momentum with multiple fastbreak layups and three-pointers, including contributions from Randleman and
Maddie Young. St. Kate's defense was also stellar, with several steals and blocks, leading to a 36-20 lead headed into halftime.
The Wildcats extended their lead in the third quarter with strong offensive and defensive plays. Key contributions came from Fox, Young, and
Greta Schimnowski, who combined for multiple layups and jumpers. The team also capitalized on turnovers, with
Lily Peper hitting a big three-pointer to push the lead to 23 points. Despite made free throws and layups from the Oles, St. Kate's remained dominant, finishing the quarter with a 52-35 advantage.
St. Kate's maintained the strong lead in the fourth quarter, with Golembiewski and Randleman helping extend the lead with layups and free throws. St. Olaf made a few runs with three-pointers and fast breaks, but St. Kate's answered back with efficient scoring and strong defense.
St. Kate's is on the road again Wednesday facing the Macalester College Scots at 7 pm, Febraury 5.
