ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team capped off its opening weekend with another commanding win, blanking Dubuque 5–0 on Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena. The Wildcats dominated all three zones, firing 40 shots on goal while holding the Spartans to just 19 in the shutout victory.
St. Kate's got on the board late in the opening frame when rookie
Lauren Schmidt buried her first collegiate goal at 16:42, set up by
Halle Dunleavy. Less than three minutes later,
Isabella Brady made it 2–0 with an unassisted tally at 19:31, giving the Wildcats momentum heading into the first intermission.
The Wildcats kept their foot on the gas in the middle period. Dunleavy extended the lead midway through the second with her first goal of the season, then
Rhiannon Ashworth added another at 14:21.
Ana Myers capped off the scoring barrage with a goal assisted by
Jaden Kozak at 18:57, pushing the lead to 5–0.
Sophomore goaltender
Addie Oettinger turned aside all 19 shots she faced to earn the shutout, including nine saves in the opening period to keep Dubuque off the board early.
Schmidt, Brady, Dunleavy, Ashworth, and Myers each found the back of the net for St. Kate's, with Dunleavy and Kozak picking up assists. Oettinger stopped all 19 shots, while Ashworth led the team with eight shots on goal followed by Myers with six and Schmidt and Brady with five each.
St. Catherine out shot Dubuque 40–19 and won 65% of faceoffs, controlling possession for most of the contest. With the 5–0 win, the Wildcats improve to 2–0–0 to start the season and will hit the road next weekend for a non-conference series at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
