MANKATO, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University softball team wrapped up their dome series in Mankato on Sunday going 1-1 to advance their overall record to 3-3. In game one, the Wildcats fell to the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings 3-2 in 8 innings before taking down Luther College 6-4.
GAME ONE | Bethany Lutheran 3, St. Catherine 2 (8 innings)
In a thrilling match up between the Vikings and the Wildcats, the game kicked off with a single to right center, bringing in two runs and giving Bethany Lutheran an early lead. However, the Wildcats quickly answered back in the bottom of the first as
Tori Vennemann's single through the left side drove in a run, narrowing the gap. The Wildcats managed to tie the game at 2-2 as Venneman was caught stealing but not before
Helen McKinnon crossed the plate.
The game remained deadlocked until the 8th inning when the Vikings capitalized on a passed ball, advancing to second while to score, breaking the tie and putting the Vikings ahead 3-2. Despite efforts from both teams, the score held, securing a hard-fought victory for the Vikings.
Taylor Brunn went 3 for 4 with one run and one double while McKinnon hit 1 for 4 with a run and one double. Sarah Christy took the loss in the circle with six strikeouts facing 32 batters.
GAME TWO | St. Catherine 6, Luther 4
Kaitlín Boyles kicked off scoring for the Wildcats in game two with a single up the middle to drive in Brunn. Annabelle Cook followed with a single to right center to bring in another run followed by Kylee Kohout's double to left center playing two more runs and giving the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
Luther battled back in the third inning with a two run double to close the gap 4-2. The momentum swing further in Luther's favor in the fourth inning tying the game at 4-4. The Wildcats refused to be outdone, responding in the bottom of the frame as McKinnon hit a double to left center bringing in a run followed by another RBI single from Boyles to extend the lead to 6-4 for the win.
Boyles was 2 for 3 with two RBI and one run as Kohout hit 1 for 2 with two RBI and one run. Christy entered the game in the top of the fourth coming in for Erica Pronschinske and claimed the win.
Next up for St. Kate's is their annual spring break trip, this year traveling to Tuscon, Arizona for ten games starting March 9. They will return to play in Minnesota on March 23 traveling to Winona, Minnesota to open the MIAC season against Saint Mary's.
