Young paces St. Kate's to storm past Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa -- The St. Catherine University basketball team returned to competition traveling to Buena Vista University on Monday afternoon for a non-conference match up against the Beavers. The Wildcats claimed a commanding 93-64 victory led by junior Maddie Young. The win puts the Wildcats at 5-4 overall on the season as they hold onto a 1-2 conference record for now. 

Young had a record game posting her first collegiate double-double scoring a career best 23 points on top of a career best ten boards. Young shot 10-13 with three assists on the court for 29 minutes. Hattie Fox followed with 20 points and seven boards shooting 100 percent from the charity line while rookie Jordyn Peed matched her collegiate best with 17 points. Emme Golembiewski joined Young collecting a double double delivering ten points and eleven rebounds while Greta Schimnowski had ten points and three boards. 

St. Kate's put up 31 points in the first quarter over Buena Vista led by Peed adding ten shooting 4-5 and going two for two from behind the arc while holding the Beavers to 18 points. Fox took the reins in the second quarter adding eight with two rebounds guiding St. Kate's to a 14 point lead headed into the half. 

Young shined in the third shooting 6 for 8 while grabbing three boards and scoring 15 of the Wildcats 27 points in the quarter. St. Kate's found themselves with a 21 point lead with 40 seconds left in the third as Buena Vista was able to add 20 to the box score. The Wildcats closed out the win in the fourth building their largest lead of the game with a 30 point advantage with just under three to play. 

St. Kate's returns to action on Tuesday, December 31 as they host the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars for a non-conference match up at 2 pm. The Wildcats return to conference play on Saturday, January 4 hosting Gustavus Adolphus at 3 pm.
