ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University soccer team made history on Saturday as they clinched their fourth consecutive MIAC Playoff Title becoming the only team in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Soccer history to do so. St. Kate's downed the No. 3 seed Saint Mary's University Cardinals 3-1 in the playoff championship game to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Soccer National Tournament with a location yet to be determined.
The Wildcats finished the playoff championships outscoring their opponents 6-2 while not dropping a conference contest all season. In today's match-up, St. Kate's trailed after the first half as the Cardinals struck first in the 30th minute. Things quickly shifted though after the half as
Natalie Pfleger scored her tenth goal of the season off an assist from
Ayah Makled under two minutes into the second half.
A minute later,
Kallie Tuominen added her eighth of the season and third of the playoffs assisted by Pfleger adding the game winner. First-year
Lydia Benson scored her first goal of the post season and fifth of the season with help from Makled with 22 minutes remaining in the championship.
Fifth-year
Kate Praetz was responsible for four saves in the game as the keeper guided her team to their fourth championship in her time at St. Kate's.
Ari Green led with four shots on goal followed by first-year defender
Jaidyn Richter.
The playoff title comes fresh off the Wildcats MIAC Regular Season Title to add to the programs total of five tournament titles all of which have happened under head coach
Jesse Campos' leadership. Campos and the Wildcats will learn their fate on Monday, November 10 with the NCAA selection show taking place at 1 PM central time.
