SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The St. Catherine University basketball team traveled to Superior, Wisconsin to claim a 66-63 victory over the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. The win is St. Kate's thrid in a row improving the record to 3-2 overall.
Maddie Young led the way scoring a career best 15 points while adding six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Young was followed by
Kaylee Miron and
Emme Golembiewski who each added eleven to the box score. Miron added four rebounds, five assists and one steal as Golembiewski had three defensive rebounds with three assists, one block and one steal.
Hattie Fox was also in double digits for points adding ten to go with her three boards and two steals.
The Wildcats edged ahead late in the first quarter thanks to contributions from
Lily Peper, who added crucial points with a layup and a tip-in. The quarter ended with St. Catherine holding a narrow 20-17 lead, setting the stage for a competitive match up.
The second quarter saw an intense back-and-forth as both teams traded baskets, with neither able to secure a decisive lead. St. Kate's maintained a slight edge early, thanks to strong inside play from Golembieswski and Young. The quarter ended with the teams deadlocked at 33, setting up an exciting second half.
The third quarter challenged the Wildcats but despite trailing by as much as seven, St. Catherine closed the quarter strong, narrowing the gap to just one point at 46-45 after clutch free throws by Fox.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter as both teams traded leads in a back-and-forth battle. St. Kate's surged ahead early, led by key baskets from Fox and Young, but Wis.-Superior kept her team close with clutch free throws. Late-game heroics by Kaylee Miron, including a three-pointer, helped St. Catherine extend their lead to four. The Wildcats sealed the win with crucial free throws by Fox.
St. Kate's travels to Bethel University on Monday to open the Minnesota Intercollegaite Athletic Conference (MIAC) season against the Royals at 7 pm.
