ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University basketball team picked up a non-conference win over the visiting Martin Luther College Knights on Wednesday at Butler Center. Eight Wildcats recorded points in the win improving St. Kate's record to 2-2 early in the season.
Rookie
Jordyn Peed had her second straight 15 point game shooting 2-2 from the free throw line while also delivering four steals and one rebound. Peed was followed by Fox who added 12 points to the box score to go along with her three steals and seven rebounds and
Kaylee Miron added a clutch eleven point with two steals and two rebounds.
Greta Schimnowski and
Emme Golembiewski each had six boards while scoring seven and eight points, respectively.
The game opened with intense defensive play from both teams, as missed opportunities and turnovers dominated the early minutes. St. Catherine took the first lead with a free throw by Schimnowski, but Martin Luther quickly responded with a layup to make it 2-1.
The Knights Luther extend their lead with key baskets, including a fastbreak 3-pointer bringing the score to 9-1. However, St. Catherine began to chip away, led by Golembieswski's layup and a fastbreak finish from Fox, narrowing the gap to 9-6.
The momentum shifted as St. Kate's capitalized on Martin Luthers turnovers, tying the game 9-9 after technical foul free throws by Schimnowski before St. Kate's took their first significant lead, 14-9.
Martin Luther fought back with a jumper by Paulsen to cut the deficit to 14-11. However, a clutch 3-pointer by Kaylee Miron and late free throws by Oberle sealed the victory for St. Catherine, finishing 19-11.
The second quarter saw a tightly contested battle between St. Catherine and Martin Luther. St. Catherine capitalized early with strong free-throw shooting by Golembieswski, extending their lead to 10. Martin Luther responded with clutch layups and jumpers, including a late three-pointer bringing them within one. However, key fast-break layups by Lily Peper helped St. Catherine maintain their edge, securing a 32–29 lead headed into the break.
In a back-and-forth stretch,the Knights narrowed the gap to one, but St. Catherine's steady scoring extended their lead late. Fox and Peed contributed key layups, and Peed's three-pointer added a 48-36 cushion with one quarter to play.
Martin Luther fought to close the gap, with a key three-pointer to start the fourth. However, St. Catherine's consistency, highlighted by Peed's free throws and a late three-pointer by Kaylee Miron, secured their lead. Despite a strong final push by Martin Luther, including a game-tying layup, St. Catherine clinched the win, 63–58, with clutch free throws and solid defense in the final seconds.
The Wildcats travel to Superior, Wisconsin on Saturday to face Wisconsin-Superior in a non-conference contest schedule for 3 pm.
