SAINT JOSEPH, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University softball team earned a conference split with No. 19 College of Saint Benedict on the road Thursday falling in game one 4-2 before taking game two 5-3. With the win in game two, the Wildcats clinched a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoffs as either the fifth or sixth seed pending the results of their final conference contest against Hamline.
GAME ONE | Saint Benedict 4, St. Catherine 2
St. Kate's took the lead in game one putting up two runs in the top of the third over the No. 19 ranked Bennies bringing in runs off errors. Saint Benedict answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame taking the win two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
GAME TWO | St. Catherine 5, St. Benedict 3
The Bennies tallied two runs in the bottom of the opening inning before the Wildcats added five runs in between the second and third innings. Junior Kaitlín Boyles got things started for St. Kate's in the top of the second driving in
Kylee Kohout cutting the lead in half. Rookie
Helen McKinnon tallied a triple in the top of the third to drive in
Taylor Brunn and
Sarah Posey and take the lead. Junior
Lynae Doty was responsible for driving in the final two runs for St. Kate's bringing in Kohout and McKinnon for the win.
Doty was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI while McKinnon hit 1 for 4 with one run and two RBI.
St. Catherine closes out the conference season on Friday hosting Hamline with the doubleheader starting at 3:30 pm.
