ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Catherine University softball team endured a pair of losses to evenly matched Gustavus Adolphus College on Thursday afternoon at St. Kate's Field. The Gusties claimed the first game by one run, 1-0, before the Wildcats scored four runs to keep a close game, however, the Gusties managed to edge out the game 5-4. St. Catherine is now 16-16 overall, with a MIAC record of 10-6 with three regular season conference games on the schedule plus a non-conference contest.
GAME ONE | Gustavus 1, St. Catherine 0
It was scoreless for the Wildcats and Gusties through the first five innings until the top of the sixth when the lone run of the game was tallied. Gustavus put themselves in scoring position with a triple to lead off the inning. After picking up a walk on the next at-bat, Gustavus hit a single to drive in the runner from third with the game winner. St. Kate's was unable to answer back in their final two chances closing out the game leaving two on base.
Junior Erica Pronschinske pitched the complete game striking out two batters.
GAME TWO | Gustavus 5, St. Catherine 4
The Gusties struck first totaling four runs at the top of the first inning. St. Kate's fought back in the third inning as Sarah Posey singled as senior Taylor Brunn advanced to second and first-year Sam Aronson scored. Brunn went on to score off a SAC fly to centerfield from Jasmine Ziegler. In the same inning, first-year Helen McKinnon singled and senior Julia Azure advanced to third to bring Posey home. The McKinnon and Posey duo did it again scoring the Wildcat's final run tying the game 4-4 at the bottom of the fifth. The Gusties then scored one final run in the 6th solidifying their win, 5-4.
St. Kate's is scheduled to travel to St. Olaf College on Saturday, April 29 in Northfield, Minn. The doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 pm.
