MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University softball team is off to a great start in conference play picking up a sweep over the Augsburg University Auggies on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats took game one 2-0 before coming back from behind in game two for a 5-4 win to advance to 8-10 overall.
GAME ONE | St. Catherine 2, Augsburg 0
St. Kate's scored early in the game putting up the only two runs of the game in the opening frame. Augsburg walked St. Kate's first two batters putting
Sarah Posey and
Taylor Brunn in scoring position with
Julia Azure at the plate. Azure hit a double to right field bringing in Posey and advancing Brunn to third. Kaitlín Boyles hit a sac fly to right field to drive in Brunn and go up 2-0.
St. Kate's only allowed four hits in the game holding them off to zero runs. Junior
Erica Pronschinske earned the win the circle striking out three facing 25 batters. Augsburg walked a total of 12 batters with rookie
Helen McKinnon hitting 2 for 4.
GAME TWO | St. Catherine 5, Augsburg 4
The second game started nearly the same as the first with Posey and Brunn scoring in the top of the first taking an early 2-0 lead again. Augsburg answered back though putting up three runs in the bottom half taking the one run lead. The Auggies struck again in the bottom of the second scoring a run off an error at third base and what would be their final run of the series. St. Kate's added their third run in the top of the fourth inning with Kohout driving in Azure and Boyles' double in the sixth to bring in
Serena Lee knotted up the game at 4-4. It was Kohout again in the top of the seventh with her third RBI of the contest bringing in Brunn for her second run of the game.
Brunn was 3 for 4 with two runs while Kohout also went 3 for 4 tallying 3 RBI and Azure hit 2 for 3 with one run.
Riley Leonhardt picked up the win in the circle giving up five hits and striking out two.
