Wildcats edge out Bowdoin after one run loss to Hope

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The St. Catherine University softball team split again on Tuesday picking up a big win over Bowdoin College after a one-run loss to Hope College on their third day at The Spring Games. In the first game of the day, Hope downed the Wildcats 1-0 before St. Kate's claimed a 12-6 win over Bowdoin. 

GAME ONE | Hope 1, St. Catherine 0
The Wildcats first hit of the game belonged to rookie Natalee Sigfrids hitting a double in the top of the second with two outs. Sigfrids was left on base though as first-year Sam Aronson struck out swinging. Hope held the Wildcats off again in the top of the third inning before scoring their lone run of the game in the bottom frame. St. Kate's didn't get on base again until the top of the sixth inning with a single from Sarah Posey and their final hit came in the top of the seventh from senior Julia Azure

First-year Riley Leonhardt pitched the complete game giving up six hits plus the one run while walking one player. She tallied one strikeout in the game bringing her season total to ten. 

GAME TWO | St. Catherine 12, Bowdoin 6
St. Kate's found steam in game two posting five runs in the opening inning. Bowdoin answered with a three-run double in the top of the second inning but the Wildcats built another two run cushion going up 7-3 headed into the third. The Polar Bears added two run in the top of the third inning leaving two on base. Things got wild in the bottom of the third with Posey reaching first off an error from Bowdoins shortstop with Aronson on second after hitting a double to left field. Aronson scored on the next play advancing off two back to back wild pitches advancing Posey to third with two outs and ultimately left of base. The Wildcats held the Polar Bears off in the fourth before Boyles drove in Sigfrids taking a 9-5 lead. St. Kate's held them off again in the fifth scoring two more in the inning and their final run in the bottom of the sixth. Bowdoin closed out the game in the top of the seventh scoring their final run off a double to right field for a 12-6 final. 

First-year Elizabeth Van Lith earned her first collegiate win in the circle pitching four innings with two strikeouts and giving up three runs. 

Boyles was 3 for 4 with two RBI and one run in the game followed by Kohout going 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI. Hellen McKinnon, Tori Vennemann and Aronson each recorded doubles in the game with Vennemann driving in two runs. 

St. Catherine returns to action on Thursday with their final series of the spring trip facing the University of Stevens Point at 10:30 am CDT followed by Millikin University at 1 pm CDT.
