ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University swimming and diving team returned to competition Friday evening competing in the Macalester College quad meet along with Augsburg University and Hamline University. St. Kate's defeated Macalester 128.5 to 98.50, Hamline 171 to 46, and Augsburg 173 to 9.
"Tremendous effort tonight from our entire team", said co-head coach,
Nicole Hempler. "The team has worked hard the past two weeks to refine some of the little details in races and that effort showed tonight. They came together to support each other and never gave up on a race, which is all the coaches could have asked for."
The meet opened with the 400-yard medley relay with the team of
Ella Hochstetler,
J Dombroski,
Emma Svendsen, and
Anneke van Oosterom finishing first with a time of 4:03.41. St. Kate's B relay of
Mary Morris,
Sierra Hermansen,
Natalie Chandler, and
Jordyn Grotbo were the third place finisher clocking in at 4:11.73. In sixth place was the Wildcats C relay team of
Brooke Halverson,
Mia Hocking,
Richanta Pollard and
Charlotte Johnson finishing at 4:28.48.
Olivia Weil was the top finisher in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 11:23.03 less than a second ahead of
Sammi Friedrich as the runner-up with a time of 11:23.52.
Nicolette Harvey was fifth in the event with a time of 12:15.07 and Mackenzie Marthlaer was sixth with a time of 12:44.45.
St. Kate's third straight first-place finish came from
Gillian Durand in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.83 while van Oosterom was third with a time of 2:03.34. Halverson had the 8th place time of 2:15.97 and
Clare Cook was right behind at 2:16.56 in ninth.
Hochstetler made it four in a row for the Wildcats touching the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.21 and
Andrea Voelker tied for third with a time of 25.92.
Ava Hacker finished in eighth with a time of 26.79 and
Shea Bradley was eleventh at 27.80.
Eloise McKeon had the 12th place time in the 50-yard freestyle clocking in at 28.00 and
Maka Chikowero was 13th at 28.17.
Emma Svendsen won the 400-yard individual medley recording a time of 4:41.64. Dombroski tallied a fourth place time of 4:53.01 and Hocking came in sixth at 5:12.18. Svendsen also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.38 and Chandler finished third with a time of 1:03.03. Hacker had a fourth place finish in the butterfly at 1:04.44, Hermansen was eighth at 1:06.47, and McKeon finished tenth at 1:12.92.
St. Kate's finished first through third in the 100-yard freestyle led by Durand at 55.30 followed by Grotbo with the runner-up time of 56.48 and van Oosterom with a third place time of 56.76. Bradley, Harvey, and Marthaler all finished with one second of each other led by Bradley at 1:02.87. Harvey was next at 1:02.94 followed by Marthaler at 1:03.38.
Voelker finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.82 followed by Weil in third at 5:38.10 and Friedrich fourth at 5:38.20. Johnson was eighth in the event with a time of 6:01.47 while Cook rounded out the field with a time of 6:14.98.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Weil was second with a time of 1:10.90, Dombroski was third at 1:12.30, Hocking was fourth at 1:13.84, and Hermansen followed in fifth at 1:14.34. The final three Wildcats in the event were Harvey, Pollard and Marthaler. Harvey clocked in at 1:18.51, Pollard at 1:18.52, and Marthaler trailed at 1:22.00.
The quad meet finished with the 400-yard freestyle relay and the Wildcats taking second, fourth, and seventh. Grotbo, Friedrich, Voelker, and Durand posted St. Kate's top-time of 3:45.78 and Chandler, Hacker, Morris, and Bradley finished at 3:55.23. In seventh-place was Cook, Johnson, McKeon, and Chikowero finishing in 4:14.47.
The Wildcat return to competition on Saturday hosting the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the College of Saint Benedict, and Saint John's University. Diving is scheduled for 10:30 am and swimming event will begin at 1 pm.
