St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Kate's earned a big win against St. Mary's Wednesday night, 75-67. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 9-5 in the conference and stay in the MIAC top six. As in their win over the Cardinals in December,
Rachel Randleman had a career game, this time hitting 6 of 7 from beyond the arc ranking her third in the Wildcats record book and finishing with 20 points.
Sam Orth also scored 20 and
Bree Glynn contributed 13; each of those seniors pulled down 8 boards, helping St. Kate's win the rebounding battle 37-25.
Randleman came out on fire: she hit back-to-back threes on the first two Wildcat possessions to stake St. Kate's to a 6-0 lead. A nice feed from
Karis Zezza to Greta Shimnowski and another from
Bree Glynn to
Sam Orth kept the offense in a nice flow. Corner threes by Sydney Elliot and
Emme Golembiewski got St. Kate's up to 24 points for the quarter. If St. Mary's hadn't shot 58.3% in the period, the lead would have been bigger than the 6 point spread at the end of the first. It was déjà vu to start the second quarter, as the first two baskets were Randleman threes, and the Wildcats went up 30-18. SMU scored some points in the paint to keep pace, but when
Emme Golembiewski scored on a nice inbound play with a minute left, the Wildcats went up by 14. A free throw by the Cardinals made the score 38-25 to end the half.
It was déjà vu all over again to start the third quarter, as the first points were a pair of Randleman threes. The Cardinals got to within 13 points a couple of times in the third, but when
Sam Orth hit a three with about 30 seconds left in the frame, it put the Wildcats up 61-44. The game tightened in the fourth. SMU started off with an 8-1 run, to cut the lead to 10. Although a layup and free throw by
Bree Glynn in the fourth minute of the quarter pushed the lead back to 14, the Cardinals would not go quietly. They scored the next 11 points to make it a one possession game (69-66) with 3 minutes remaining. Free throws by Glynn staunched the bleeding, and then a crucial drive to the basket by Orth got the lead back to 6 with just under a minute left. The Wildcat defense held SMU scoreless the rest of the way, and some free throws brought the final score to 75-67.
The Wildcats head north on Snelling Avenue to play at Hamline on Saturday the 28
th at 3pm.
