ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team turned it around in game two of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series with Saint Mary's University earning the split with a 6-3 defeat of the Cardinals. St. Kate's improves to 10-5-2 on the season with a conference record of 4-4-2 with four series remaining on the Wildcats' MIAC schedule.
The Cardinals picked up right where they left off from Friday evening taking a one goal lead at 7:03 into the first period. However, St. Kate's answered back quickly with a goal less than 40 seconds later from rookie
Ellie Skaja. Skaja's first collegiate goal was assisted by juniors
Madi Fleming and
Lauren Henriksen to finish the period 1-1.
Senior
Marie Reimer tallied her ninth goal of the season early in the second period with help from first-year
Paige Loidolt and senior
Laura Denchfield. The trio struck again with less than six minutes to play in the second this from Denchfield from Reimer and Loidolt going St. Kate's a 3-1 lead at the end of the period.
Fleming scored the game winner with over 12 left to play in the game from junior Sam Lackmann building a three goal cushion for the purple and gold.
Saint Mary's took advantage of a high-sticking penalty at 13:01 off the clock while Denchfield wasted no time again scoring an unassisted goal at 13:27. The Cardinals final goal of the game was scored with just under four minutes to play bringing it to 5-3. They went on to pull their goalie for the extra skater but were unsuccessful as Reimer added her second of the game scoring an empty net goal from Denchfield.
St. Kate's returns to Drake Arena on Friday, January 27 hosting No. 1 Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 pm and will turn around traveling to Saint Peter on Saturday for a 2 pm game against the Gusties.
