ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Wildcats ran into a Gustavus Adolphus buzz-saw on Saturday, losing by a score of 76-31. Gustavus showed why they entered the game leading the conference in a number of statistics, including: points per game (73) and average scoring margin (21). Bree Glynn led Wildcat scorers with 10 points. Karis Zezza chipped in 4 and first-year Mallory Johnson scored her first 3 points of season. Emme Golembiewski pulled down 6 boards. But the Wildcats shot only 21.3% from the field and missed on all 14 of their three-point attempts. Gustavus forced them into 22 turnovers.
After the tipoff, the Gusties jumped out to a 12-2 lead by hitting a pair of threes, and by turning steals into points. St. Kate's climbed back into it with some points in the paint and a couple of free throws to make it 12-8. Gustavus then scored 7 unanswered to make it a double-digit game. Then, in the last possession of the first quarter, Bree Glynn converted from the low post to make it 19-10. Glynn stayed hot to start the second quarter, scoring a pair of buckets in the early going to make it 20-14. But then Gustavus went on an emphatic 17-point run that put them in the driver's seat. At the half, they led 38-18.
Some free thows by Greta Schimnowski cut the deficit to 18 early in the third, but Gustavus once again put the clamps on and extended their lead, going up by as much as 34 points. Emme Golembiewski hit a jumper to close out the third on a positive note for St. Kate's. Free throws by Maddie Rosen and Mallory Johnson, and a bucket each for Johnson and Zezza were all the scoring plays the Wildcats could muster in the fourth quarter, as the Gusties rolled to victory.
