ST, PAUL, Minn. – A hot Carleton team extended their win streak to four games on Monday night as they beat the Wildcats 73-56. Head-to-head, each team has won one contest this season. St. Kate's falls to 4-11 in the MIAC, while the Knights are now 8-10 in the conference.
Carleton started the game on a 12-4 run. The Wildcats responded with 5 unanswered points to cut the lead to 3 with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. The Knights then heated up from outside and pushed their lead to 10 at the end of the first. Halfway through the second quarter, the Knights' sixth three-pointer of the game put them up by 20. Again the Wildcats scrapped back, as they whittled the lead down to 8 with two minutes left in the half. At the break, Carleton led 39-29.
Both offenses sputtered at the start of the second half, as after four minutes of play the score was 44-33. Then, both teams picked up the pace and started finding their shots, so that when Carleton made their last two attempts in the quarter, they led 57-42. While St. Kate's defense pressed for much of the game, they really dialed up the intensity in the fourth and were able to cut the deficit to 9 with 3:50 on the clock. But they couldn't get any closer. A bucket by Carleton with 2:25 left sent the lead back to double figures and started an 8-0 run that finished it.
Sam Orth led Wildcat scorers with 12 points.
Bree Glynn chipped in 10 on an efficient 4-for-7 from the floor while also pulling down 8 boards. The Wildcats' next game is at Macalester at 7 pm on February 9.
