WINONA, Minn. -- St. Kate's won its third straight MIAC contest (after a forfeit win over Carleton) to improve to a record of 4-1. As per usual, they showed off their depth. While Rachel Randleman led the team in the scoring column with 10 points, ten different Wildcats contributed points in the game, including Karis Zezza with 9 and Sam Orth and Emme Golembiewski, each with 8. In their four games this year, the Wildcats' bench has outscored their opponents' benches by a combined score of 103-32.
St. Kate's built a small lead early in the game when Rachel Randleman hit a three pointer to make it 10-4. When Maddie Young's layup dropped with 1:20 remaining, the Wildcats had a 9-point advantage. But the Cardinals responded, and Brooklyn Paulson's three in the closing seconds of the quarter cut St. Kate's advantage to just 5 points. The Cardinals carried that momentum into the 2nd quarter and went up 20-19 with seven minutes left in the half. Impressively, St. Kate's answered by putting together an efficient 14-2 run. At the half, the Wildcats led 36-26.
A nice start to the third extended the lead. An Emme Golembiewski layup midway through the quarter put St. Kate's up 47-30. For the rest of the third, both teams struggled to score, and the quarter ended with the Wildcats up 47-32. St. Mary's made it interesting in the fourth, whittling the lead down to 7 points with just over two minutes left. But St. Kate's remained composed, playing good defense and taking care of the ball to pull out the victory.
The Wildcats head to Northfield to take on St. Olaf on December 10th.
