SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Friday evening saw Coach
Don Mulhern successfully lead the Wildcats to victory over his long-time former UW-Superior team.
Sam Orth led all scorers with 24 points in just 23 minutes, shooting 9-13 from the floor and 6-6 from the line; she also pulled down 9 rebound and had 3 assists and 2 steals.
Bree Glynn and
Greta Schimnowski each contributed 8 points.
The Wildcats started the game with a 9-2 run. The Yellow Jackets answered by effectively breaking the St. Kate's press and scoring 10 unanswered points to take a 3-point lead. The teams played the next several minutes fairly evenly: two minutes into the second quarter the score was tied at 21. St. Kate's then went on a 17-5 run. As the period wound down, a layup by
Sam Orth (giving her 16 points in the half) and a three by
Greta Schimnowski had the Wildcats up by double digits. A three pointer by Superior in the closing seconds of the half brought them to within nine: 38-29.
After the break, the Wildcats picked up where they left off, scoring 17 in the third quarter and holding the Jackets to just 5. Superior scored the first 5 points of the final frame to cut the Wildcat lead to 15, but they never got closer. St. Kate's won all four quarters and finished the game with a comfortable 22-point advantage.
The Wildcats play their second and final game in the tournament tomorrow afternoon against Finlandia University.
