EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The No. 19 St. Catherine softball team split with non-conference foe, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire claiming a 6-2 win in game one and falling 12-11 in a nine inning battle on Saturday. The Wildcats are now 3-1 on the season.
Game One | St. Catherine 6, UW-Eau Claire 2
The Blugolds of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire were on the board first in game one before
Jasmine Ziegler got the Widlcats on the board in the second inning to knot it up. It remained a back and fourth battle until the Wildcats were able to take a two run lead in the fifth inning. St. Kate's added two more in the sixth inning as
Lindsay Burr doubles to right center bringing in
Shannon Leahy and
Taylor Brunn.
Annabelle Schutte closed out the game in the circle with six strikeouts while allowing zero runs five innings earning the win.
Game Two | St. Catherine 11, UW-Eau Claire 12
Brunn put the Wildcats on the board early in the first inning after a sacrifice from
Angela Huepfel. St. Kate's took a four run lead after Burr brought in junior
Alex Ehde as senior MiKayla Grant hit a double to left center bringing in
Alyssa Wicks and Burr. Huepfel remained hot early in the game bringing in Ehde again for an unearned run getting St. Kate's up 5-0 early in the second inning.
Alyssa Montero hit a single down the middle earning two RBI and getting the Wildcats a 9-0 in the third inning.
Momentum switched after the top of the third inning with the Blugolds inching their way back to even the game 9-9 in the sixth inning. Leahy brought Ehde in off an error from UW-Eau Claire to take a 10-9 lead before Ehde brought in Ziegler in the 9th. St. Kate's gave up two late runs in the ninth inning allowing the Blugolds to take the lead as St. Kate's was unable to make a comeback.
Proper closed out the game for St. Kate's in the circle recording four strikeouts and allowing five runs off of six hits. Montero started game two tallying three strikeouts and giving up four runs.
The Wildcats are back in action Friday, March 26 as they head to the University of Northwestern-.St. Paul for a pair of non-conference games at 4 and 6 pm.
