MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - After day two at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, St. Catherine remains in first place with a team score of 244. With six swimming events completed after Thursday's finals session, the Wildcats have claimed the top-time in each individual and relay event this far.
The second day opened with preliminary trials as thirteen Wildcats had their chance to make the Thursday's finals session in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, and the 50-yard freestyle.
The morning session also included the first portion of the women's one-meter dive event as senior
Emilee Lance and first-year
Emma Trettin completed six of eleven dives. Lance finished in 17th with a score of 301.25 ahead of Trettin in 23rd with a score of 156.20.
The finals session opened with the 500-yard freestyle as defending champion
Maggie Menso claimed the top-time with a 2019 selection time of 4:56.87.
Molly McMahon finished in 12th place with a time of 5:19.64 while
Tori Hagstrom swam a lifetime best 5:22.98, good for 14th place.
Jordyn Wentzel set her first individual meet record of the championship in the 200-yard individual medley finishing with a 2019 selection time of 2:01.59 and just shy of her own MIAC record of 2:01.00.
Hannah Svendsen was third in the event with a time of 2:08.18 swimming a lifetime best split of 27.75. Franceska Hernandez-Nieltling finished in the ninth spot with a time of 2:10.82 while
Annie Voss was within .15 seconds in tenth at 2:10.97.
Macy Klein defended her title in the 50-yard freestyle taking the top spot with a finals time of 23.58 which is good for an NCAA "B" Standard Qualifying time. In the preliminary trials, Klein swam a 23.50 which is .02 off of her lifetime best of 23.48 from the 2019 championships. Rookie
Andrea Voelker finished in ninth place in the 50-yard freestyle swimming a lifetime best 24.56.
The 400-yard medley relay closed out the second day of competition with St. Catherine claiming their sixth title of the championship setting a program and meet record of 3:47.07 qualifying as a 2019 selection time.
Amelia Baxley was off the blocks first for St. Catherine swimming a lifetime best split of 56.48 in the backstroke while Wentzel, Svendsen, Klein made up the breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle events, respectively.
The preliminary trials for session five begin at 10:30 am including the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle relay, 100-yard breaststroke, and the 100-yard backstroke. The finals session for Friday will also include the 200-yard freestyle relay event.
