DULUTH/SUPERIOR - The volleyball team finished 1-1 at their doubleheader up north on Saturday. Senior Emma Nelson had herself a day, leading the Wildcats in almost every statistical category.
MATCH 1: L, 1-3 (24-26, 25-19, 17-25, 20-25)
St. Kate's first match of the day at St. Scholastica found the Wildcats down 1-0 after a close first set. The team battled back to win the second, but surrendered the final two sets to the Saints. Nelson tallied 13 kills, 7 blocks, and 14 digs. Junior Erin Tebben contributed 9 kills, and sophomore Grace Amacher finished with 13 digs. The Wildcats hopped back on the bus and went down the road to face University of Wisconsin-Superior for the nightcap.
MATCH 2: W, 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 27-25)
St. Kate's flipped the script in the second match of the day, avenging an earlier five-set loss to Superior at the River Falls Tournament. The Wildcats took the first two sets before the Yellowjackets answered to take the third set, 25-22. Each set was within five points in the closely-contested match. Nelson picked up right where she left off, finishing with 3 of the team's 5 aces, including the game winner in the fourth set. She also had 14 kills and 17 digs. Amacher and Lauren Isaacson each had 14 digs, and first-year Marissa Gilbertson contributed 22 assists.
Head coach Todd Nelson noted following the two-match day, Â "All day the team put forth good efforts. We had a hard time getting our rhythm vs. St. Scholastica. In our 2nd match vs. UW-Superior, I thought our passing was outstanding, which allowed our attackers to get some good swings. I also thought we competed throughout the match and really exemplified our motto for the season of #BattleTogether!"
The Wildcats are back home Wednesday for a conference game against No. 8 Saint Benedict at 7 pm.Â
