ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Wildcat soccer team (1-1, 0-0 MIAC) came out with a similar intensity exhibited in Friday's season-opening win, but ultimately fell to the visiting Blugolds (1-1, 0-0 WIAC) by a score of 1-0. St. Kate's pressured Eau Claire for much of the first half, tallying eight shots on goal to the Blugold's zero.
Sophomore
Lauren Witte and first-year Mandy Elton each had two shots on goal in the first half, but goalie Anna Sveiven made several spectacular saves throughout the game for Eau Claire.
St. Kate's stingy defense held up well, allowing only 2 shots on goal and just 4 shots total the whole game. The Blugolds lone goal came in the 70th minute off a free kick, looping around a wall of Wildcat defenders.
The Wildcats pressured Eau Claire the whole game, with a couple of excellent plays coming up just short of a goal, including a beautiful shot off the foot of junior Rachael Holm, back from an injury that kept her on the sideline last season.
While St. Kate's suffered the home loss, they look primed to have a competitive season, with fresh faces and veterans contributing to an up-tempo team that is fun to watch.
St. Catherine will return to St. Kate's Field next Saturday for a 2 p.m. game hosting non-conference opponent, Coe College.
