ST. PAUL, Minn. - In a close, back-and-forth game Saturday afternoon, the Wildcat soccer team came away with the win, secured by an overtime penalty kick by sophomore
Taylor Johnson. St. Catherine defeated the visiting Macalester College Scots 3-2 in overtime for their third Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win.
Macalester struck first, with Carolyn Eckstein scoring in the 22
nd minute. St. Kate's responded ten minutes later, when sophomore
Sofia Campbell booted one in off an assist from senior
Amanda Carey, Campbell's fifth of the season. The Scots took a 2-1 lead into the second half, their second goal coming off a penalty kick in the 36
th minute.
MIAC assist leader, first-year
Amanda Elton, showed she can score as well as facilitate, netting a goal eight minutes into the second half for her fifth of the year. The rest of regulation was high-intensity, yet neither team was able to get anything thanks to big saves from both goalkeepers. Kate Lawhead of the Scots had twelve saves, while senior keeper
Tayler Koop had five, including three in the second half and one in overtime.
St. Kate's received the penalty kick in the 94
th minute courtesy of a yellow card against Lawhead, setting up T. Johnson's opportunity. She calmly stepped up and guided the ball into the lower left corner, clinching the victory for the Wildcats and joining Campbell and Elton with her fifth goal of the year.
The Wildcats travel to play Viterbo tomorrow, October 20
at 3 PM.
