Double OT goal leads Wildcats to MIAC victory at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. - On a day dedicated to Pediatric Cancer Awareness, the St. Catherine University soccer team picked up their first conference victory in over a week on the road. With the win, St. Kate's improves their record to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play with Saint Mary's is 5-5 overall and winless against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents.

Sophomore forward Lauren Witte (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) put the Wildcats on the board first in the 18th minute with an assist from forward Sofia Campbell (St. Paul, Minn. / Nova Classical Academy). After the Wildcats goal, they continued to pressure Saint Mary's with three corner kicks from Iryna Talkachova (Minsk, Belarus / Shattuck St. Mary's). St. Kate's held the lead through the rest of the first half getting a total of 10 shots off in the first half to the Cardinals 1 shot.

Six minutes into the second half, the Cardinals tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal from Maura Michener. In the 57th minute, Talkachova netted her second goal of the season from a corner kick to take the lead at 2-1.  After holding the 2-1 lead for nearly 20 minutes, the Cardinals got past the Wildcats to tie it at 2-2 and remain there to the end of regulation. In the first overtime period, the Wildcats controlled much of the play but unable to get past the Cardinals goalkeeper Gabriella Pederson.

Under a minute into the second OT, Witte grabbed her second of the game with an assist from junior midfielder Alyssa Siljendahl (Duluth, Minn. / Hermantown) for the win. Game leaders for the Wildcats were Witte with 2 goals, 7 shots and 6 shots on goal.
