ST. PAUL, MINN. – The wait is finally over.
After an early April snow shower, four canceled or postponed games, and a large amount of scrambling, the St. Catherine University softball team is, finally, going to play softball in the great state of Minnesota. Specifically, the Wildcats are finally about the start their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season on Sunday, when they host Carleton College at 8:30 p.m. in the Auggie Dome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
It's been quite the week for St. Kate's softball team, as two MIAC doubleheaders were canceled due to the snow storm that hit Minnesota on April 3. However, the Wildcats have made the best of the situation, as they were able to snag the Auggie Dome for Sunday's doubleheader against the Knights for their first MIAC games of the season.
First pitch between St. Kate's and Carleton is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at the Augsburg University Dome with game two to follow.
Live stats will be available for both games, and score updates will be available on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats). Fans are encouraged to check the twitter feed, as scores will be posted online in the event technically issues arise.
Here are the five things to know before Sunday's doubleheader:
8 – Eight inches of snow fell in the twin cities on April 3, forcing the Wildcats and several MIAC team to cancel their conference openers. St. Kate's was supposed to open the MIAC season on Wednesday, April 4 with a 3:30 p.m. home game against the College of Saint Benedict, but that doubleheader was postponed to April 17. The Wildcats were also scheduled to play Hamline University on Saturday as well, but weather forced yet another postponement.
3 – Sunday will mark the third conference doubleheader for the Knights, as they will have played both Augsburg and Saint Mary's by the time Sunday rolls around. Carleton was swept by Augsburg on April 4 and will take on the Cardinals at the RCTC Dome in Rochester, Minnesota on April 7.
15 – Last year, St. Kate's scored a combined 15 runs in its two-game split with the Knights. The Wildcats outscored Carleton 13-2 in the series opener before dropping game two 3-2. However, St. Kate's was without pitcher
Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) during the series, as the then-junior missed the games due to illness.
50 – Through its first 15 games this season, St. Kate's batters have accumulated 50 walks, the second highest total in the MIAC. It's also nearly double the walk total the Wildcats acquired at this point in 2017. Leading the way is junior
Jenna George (Ellsworth, Wis. / Ellsworth) who has been walked a grand total of 11 times this season. Not far behind is senior
Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson), who has recorded eight bases on balls this season.
23 – St. Kate's will have to manage the Knights senior outfielder Katie Eppard, who is having quite the final season. Eppard, the March 26 MIAC Softball Player-of-the-Week, currently leads the MIAC in runs batted in (RBI), with 23 total this season. She also has the third highest batting average in the conference (.463) and slugging percentage (.780) in the conference.
