ST. PAUL, MINN. – It was a momentous day for the St. Catherine University tennis team. After months of playing indoors, the Wildcats finally christened their new tennis facilities at St. Kate's, as their final regular season home match of the season was a legitimate home match. Sadly, St. Kate's was unable to come away with a victory against No. 28 Gustavus Adolphus College, falling by a final score of 8-1.

Maddy Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) was the lone Wildcat to win in Saturday afternoon's match, as she pulled off a huge upset as the No. 6 singles player. Knoll defeated Ally Thorsen in the opening match 6-1 then played a nail biter in set two, eventually winning 7-5 to take the match.

Knoll also played in a hard fought doubles match with partner
Aubrey Eckstrom (St. James, Minn. / St. James). The two sophomores battled with the Gusties No. 3 team, but ultimately fell by a final score of 8-4.

The other Wildcat doubles team didn't fare much better, as they fell behind 3-0 after the opening segment of play. No. 1 team of
Alisha Wiedmeier (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens) and
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) dropped their match 8-4, while No. 2 team of
Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn. / Princeton) and
Ella Graham (Madison, S.D. / Madison) fell 8-2.

St. Kate's also battled in singles play, with Knoll as the only victorious individual on the courts. Wiedmeier and Sporer both fell by scores of 6-3, 6-1 as the team's No. 1 and 3 singles players, while Dorr and Graham lost their respective matches by scores of 6-1, 6-0.

Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) also battled as the Wildcats No. 4 singles player, ultimately falling 6-2, 6-2.

With the loss, St. Kate's overall record falls to 11-6, and the team is now 4-6 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. Despite the loss, the Wildcats will still play in the MIAC playoffs, starting on Tuesday, May 1. As the No. 6 seed, St. Kate's will take on the No. 3 seed at a yet to be determined location.
