Softball returns to action with Augsburg doubleheader

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The Minnesota landscape is not quite a site for sore eyes or softball fans. Despite it being April 19, only white can be seen for miles after a blizzard struck the Twin Cities area over the weekend. After three postponed games, though, the St. Catherine University softball team is finally back in action, as the team will "host" Augsburg University at 4 and 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Auggie Dome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This will be the third consecutive "home" dome game the Wildcats will play at Augsburg, as they hosted both Carleton College and Macalester College in the past two weeks. It's also the first of four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheaders St. Kate's will play over the next five days, as it will also take on Concordia College, Saint Mary's University and Gustavus Adolphus College in the ensuing days.

Live stats will be available for the Wildcats doubleheader against the Auggies, and score updates can be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats). Fans are encouraged to check the twitter feed in the event of technical difficulties.

Here are the five things to know before St. Kate's takes on Augsburg:

15.8 – The Twin Cities area, including St. Paul and Minneapolis, was pounded by an average of 15.8 inches of snow last weekend, forcing quite the conundrum for the Wildcats softball team. While St. Kate's was able to get its doubleheader against Macalester College in on Saturday, the team was unable to play the Auggies on Sunday, as the snowfall forced Augsburg to close its dome's doors for a 24 hour period.

3 – Senior ace Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) gave up just three earned runs in over 16 innings of work last week. Flugstad went the distance by pitching all 11 innings in the Wildcats 4-2 win over Bethel, giving up just two earned runs in 11 innings of work while keeping the Royals off the boards from the seventh to the 11th inning. She also surrendered just one run to Macalester in St. Kate's win 9-1, six inning win over the Scots on Saturday.

.417 – Flugstad's catching counterpart Sammie Galvez (Gilbert, Ariz. / Williams Field) had a week to remember for the Wildcats. The junior hit a team-leading .417 during the week, with five hits and 12 at bats and six RBI to boot. Galvez hit the go-ahead and eventual game-winning double in the top of the 11th inning in St. Kate's 4-2 extra innings win over Bethel and her sacrifice squeeze put the Wildcats ahead 3-0 in game two. Galvez also hit .500 against Macalester and was the only student-athlete to record at least on RBI in all four games during the week.

0 – Flugstad wasn't the only St. Kate's pitcher to find success against the Scots. First year Kathryn Proper (St. Paul, Minn. / Como Park) and senior Kailee Berquam (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) combined to throw a two-hit shutout in the Wildcats 8-0 game two victory Saturday afternoon. Proper surrendered just two hits while striking out five in four innings of work, while Berquam threw a near perfect two innings, save the one walk she surrendered in the sixth inning.

87 – In order to earn victories on Thursday, St. Kate's batters will have to crack Auggie ace Samantha Anderson. The junior has racked up 87 strike outs this season, which ranks second in the MIAC behind St. Olaf's Julie Graf. Anderson also ranks second in the conference in overall wins (8) this season.
