Basketball to close regular season with Gustavus

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University basketball team already knows its fate. The Wildcats will be playing in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) postseason tournament for the second consecutive year. What St. Kate's doesn't know is who it will be playing in Tuesday's quarterfinal game, which could be decided on Saturday when the team's hosts Gustavus Adolphus College at 3 p.m. in the Butler Center Gym.

While the Wildcats and Gusties both already punched their ticket to the conference tournament, there are still plenty of playoff implications for both teams. With a win over Gustavus and a Saint Mary's loss, St. Kate's could be the No. 5 seed in the MIAC Playoffs rather than the No. 6 seed. On the flip side, the Gusties could clinch the No. 3 seed outright with a win over the Wildcats or fall to No. 4 with a loss of their own.

Live stats and video will be available for Saturday's big game, and score updates can be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before 3 p.m. tip off:

8 – St. Kate's won its eighth game in MIAC play on Wednesday, marking the third straight-season the Wildcats have won at least eight games in conference play. It is, statistically, the most successful three-year stint in program history.

6 – More impressively, this will be the sixth consecutive year St. Kate's head coach Don Mulhern will participate in a conference tournament. The Wildcats first year head coach led UW-Superior to five consecutive conference tournament appearances in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

50 – St. Kate's earned its second straight berth to the MIAC playoffs thanks to a tiebreaker win over Concordia College. Depending on the outcomes of this weekend's games, the Wildcats and Cobbers could end up in a tie for sixth place with identical records of 8-10 in conference play. However, thanks to a complicated tiebreaker, St. Kate's holds a slim 50-48.5 point advantage over Concordia, therefore giving the team its MIAC playoff berth.

3 – With her 30 points on Wednesday, Danica Cambrice (Minneapolis, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) became the first player in program history to record three 30+ point games in the same season. The only other Wildcat to do so is former guard LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn. / Humboldt), who recorded two 30+ point games as a sophomore in 2015-16.

40 – St. Kate's and Gustavus have already met once this season, but things did not go the Wildcats way. St. Kate's scored a season-low 40 points against the then-No. 25 Gusties, losing by a final score of 67-40. No Wildcats scored in double-digits in the loss, as Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins) was the team's leading scorer with nine points.
