Basketball to host Saint Mary’s in first MIAC game of 2018

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University basketball team ended 2017 on a high note. The Wildcats snapped their two games losing streak and started the second half of the 2017-18 season with a 63-53 win over the University of Minnesota-Morris. On Wednesday, St. Kate's hopes to keep the good times rolling, as it hosts Saint Mary's University in its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) game of 2018.

Games between the Wildcats and Cardinals have been some of the most intense of the season in recent years. For fans who cannot attend the game in person, live stats and video will be available for viewing and score updates can be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before this evening's contest:

12 – Last season, St. Kate's rallied from a 12 point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Saint Mary's 55-53 in what proved to be one of the most crucial wins of the season. The Wildcats clinched their spot in the MIAC postseason with the victory and eliminated the Cardinals from playoff contention, as they were the No. 6 seed in the tournament entering that February game.

17.6 – If St. Kate's is going to have success Wednesday night, the team is going to have to stop Saint Mary's top scorer Brandi Blattner. The junior forward has earned All-America honors in each of the past two seasons and currently ranks third in the MIAC in scoring (17.6) and second in rebounds (9.8).

41.8 – While Blattner may be one of the top rebounders in the MIAC, the Wildcats have found quite a bit of success on the boards as well. As a team, St. Kate's currently leads the conference in rebounds per game vs. MIAC opponents (41.8) and in offensive rebounds vs. MIAC opponents (17.0).

21 – Senior forward Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins) tied her career high in points in the Wildcats 63-53 win over UM-Morris on Saturday. Garcia scored 16 of those points in the second half, thanks to 5-8 shooting from the field.

1st – Garcia wasn't the only senior to find success in Saturday's contest. Fellow senior Meg Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) also had a career day on the court, scoring 14 points while pulling in a career high 11 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career with St. Kate's.
