Soccer leaves Carleton with 3-3 draw

NORTHFIELD, MINN. – Last year, the St. Catherine University soccer team learned just how important a tie is. The Wildcats tied Carleton College 2-2 in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener, which set the tone for a historic season.

Over 365 days later, it was a similar story. After battling and clawing for 110 minutes of play, St. Kate's left Northfield with a big-time 3-3 draw against Carleton, to move up the rankings in the MIAC standings.

The Knights were the first team to strike in the opening minutes of play. Nora Mertz booted the ball past Tayler Koop (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) at 5:48 in the first half. However, the Wildcats were quick to answer with a goal of their own in the 22nd minute. After approximately 15 minutes of neutral play, St. Kate's managed to push the ball deep into Carleton's zone and earned a corner kick after Allie Bird's (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) shot was deflected out of bounds. The corner kick opportunity was exactly what the Wildcats needed to even the score, as Gabi Fetting (Farmington, Minn. / Farmington) headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.

For the next 23 minutes, St. Kate's and the Knights battled for possession as both teams tried to take an outright lead. However, neither team was able to score for a second time, resulting in a 1-1 at the half.

Both the Wildcats and Carleton came out firing to start the second half of play, with the Knights scoring their second goal of the game on a fluke play in St. Kate's zone. Carleton's Julia Kenney seemingly passed the ball across the field to a teammate, but it soared past a jumping Jessica Perez-Adame (San Jacinto, Calif. / San Jacinto) for the Knights second goal of the game.

The Wildcats weren't done scoring though. Molly Hayes (South St. Paul, Minn. / South St. Paul) scored the equalizer two minutes after Carleton scored its second goal of the game, tying the score at 2-2. Then, in the 63rd minute, St. Kate's scored yet again on another corner kick opportunity, taking a 3-2 lead.

Perez-Adame was stellar in net for the Wildcats for the remaining 20 minutes of play, but the Knights did manage to score a third goal in the 77th minute. Despite multiple opportunities for both teams, neither St. Kate's nor Carleton was able to score in the final 20 minutes, resulting in a sudden death overtime to determine the victor. An extra 10 minutes, though, wasn't enough to determine a victor, and the Wildcats and Knights headed into a second overtime. While both teams had multiple chances to score the game-winner, neither St. Kate's nor Carleton was able to put the ball away, resulting in the 3-3 tie.

Two different Wildcats, Fettig and Hayes, scored their first goals of the season, while Koop and Perez-Adame made a combined six saves in 110 minutes of play.

Thanks to the tie, St. Kate's overall record improves to 1-4-2, and the team has a 1-1-2 mark in MIAC play. The Wildcats will return to the field this weekend, when they host Saint Mary's University at 1 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota.
