Volleyball returns to tournament play at Coe Triangular

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The St. Catherine University volleyball team wasted no time jumping in to the 2017 season. In the last two weeks, the Wildcats have played 10 matches and posted a 5-5 weekend. On Saturday, St. Kate's looks to establish an above .500 record at the Coe Triangular in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Wildcats will face Occidental College and host Coe in the triangular tournament in back-to-back games at 1 and 3 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for both matches, and score updates can be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

With a busy weekend ahead, here are the five things to know before first serve:

.444 – Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Breuer (St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) led the team in hitting in Wednesday night's 3-1 loss to the College of Saint Benedict. Breuer hit .444 with nine kills and just one error on 18 attempts. The sophomore was also credited with five blocks and a service ace, and sparked St. Kate's near comeback in its 25-22 set four loss.

3 – The Wildcats have three student-athletes that rank in the top-15 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in aces per set average. Breuer is second in the conference with an average of .54, while Larissa Kisch (Oakdale, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) and Libby Kreuser (White Bear Lake, Minn. / Totino-Grace) are tied for tenth with an average of .43.

10 – Occidental and Coe have a combined record of 10-6 this season. Occidental is 5-2 entering this weekend's tri-tournament and have yet to start conference play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). Coe is 5-4 and fresh off their first Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) win over Loras College.

1/3 – St. Kate's currently leads the MIAC in overall kills as a teams with 80. By comparison, tri-tournament host Coe is third in the IIAC in service aces (68) and Occidental ranks seventh (47) in the SCIAC.

2 – The Wildcats will be only the second team from the MIAC to face either Coe or Occidental. Coe beat Carleton College in a tournament earlier this season with Occidental lost to Bethel University in its second match of 2017.
