Softball takes on Saint Ben’s, Hamline in final weekend of regular season

ST. PAUL, MINN. – After 36 games in 62 days, the St. Catherine University softball game all comes down to four games. The Wildcats will play two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, St. Kate's will travel to St. Joseph, Minnesota to take on the College of Saint Benedict before returning home Sunday to hopefully host the Hamline University Pipers.

Fans who can't make the trip to St. Joseph can watch the game online via either live stats or video. Live stats will also be available for Sunday's doubleheader against the Pipers.

Here are the five facts to know before softball's big weekend:

2013 – On Thursday, the Wildcats swept Gustavus for the first time since 2013 and for the first time in head coach Colleen Powers tenure at St. Kate's. After falling behind 3-0 in game one, the Wildcats came back and won the opener 9-3 before taking game two 5-4.

13 – Junior ace Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) struck out 13 Gustie batters in two games, including nine in the first. She also earned her 17th and 18th wins of the season, bringing her career total to 51 wins at St. Kate's.

1.47 – Entering this week, third baseman Jenna George (Ellsworth, Wis. / Ellsworth) was fifth in the nation in RBI per game. The sophomore currently averages 1.47 RBIs per game, and on Thursday, broke the school record for RBI in a single season. George has 46 RBI this season, breaking Michaela Bruns record of 44 RBI in a single season.

22 – Sophomore left fielder Anna Hinderaker (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) also broke a school record on Thursday for single season walks. This season, Hinderaker has been walked 22 times, breaking the school record Robyn Rohr set last season with 21 walks in a season.

3 – This will be the third time St. Kate's has attempted to play Hamline this season. The Wildcats and Pipers were originally supposed to play on April 15 in a 1 and 3 p.m. doubleheader at St. Kate's. Due to storms and a slightly soggy field, the doubleheader was pushed back to April 26. However, because it's Minnesota in April, the second doubleheader was rescheduled, this time because of frigid temperatures.
