Basketball earns 67-58 win over Linfield

PORTLAND, ORE. – Sunday may be associated with many things, including football and the occasional trip to church, but for the St. Catherine University basketball team, Sunday is just a good day to win a basketball game. In their second game of the Lewis and Clark Bon Appetite Tip Off Tournament, the Wildcats tamed their wild west opponent, Linfield College, Sunday afternoon, as they defeated the other Wildcats by a final score of 67-58.

Danica Cambrice (St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) led St. Kate's offensive and defensive attack, as she led the team both in scoring and rebounds Sunday afternoon. The sophomore scored 21 points from the floor and added a team-leading eight rebounds and five steals during the game. She was also one of three Wildcats to score in double-digits on Sunday, as both Meg Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) and Jackie Radford (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) achieved the feet for the first time this season.

Despite the final score, things weren't exactly going St. Kate's way to start the game. In fact, the Wildcats fell into a quick 7-2 deficit, as hot shooting helped Linfield jump out to an early five point lead. However, St. Kate's scored five points over a two minute time spanning to even the score at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. Radford, Cambrice and first year forward Morgan Kurth (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) all scored during the Wildcats run and Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins) eventually helped the team take a 9-7 lead with her first basket of the game.

After the slow start, St. Kate's eventually started scoring and firing on all cylinders and held a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats scoring prowess continued and they led by as many as nine points midway through the second quarter. However, Linfield slowly but surely whittled away at St. Kate's lead, eventually cutting it to 28-24 with three minutes remaining in the first half. With under three minutes left, though, Radford hit a big time three to put the Wildcats ahead by eight, as they cruised to a 36-26 half time lead.

Despite the 10 point lead at halftime, Linfield still managed to make things interested, as it cut St. Kate's shooting percentage in half to start the third quarter. In fact, the home team cut the Wildcats lead to just two points in the third quarter, as they were desperately trying to hold on to a 36-34 lead. However, just like in the previous half, St. Kate's shooters made baskets when it mattered most, and the Wildcats were able to jump back ahead and held a 48-40 lead with just 10 minutes left to play in regulation.

Although Linfield threatened again in the fourth and final quarter, St. Kate's was just too good offensively, as it went on to win the game by a final score of 67-58. Cambrice led the team in scoring with 21 points, while Meg Clark and Radford added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Thanks to the win, the Wildcats are now 2-1 on the season after going 1-1 at the Lewis and Clark Bon Appetite Tournament. St. Kate's will return to the court on Sunday, November 27, when it travels to Menominee, Wisconsin for a 2 p.m. tip off against the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
