Soccer, volleyball host MIAC teams in home doubleheader

ST. PAUL, MINN. – It's a big Wednesday for the St. Catherine University soccer and volleyball teams. Both teams return to St. Kate's for two big games against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents. Both games have implications in the MIAC standings, as soccer looks to avoid its first conference loss of the season while volleyball looks for its first MIAC win of 2016.

Soccer will open the afternoon with a 4 p.m. game versus Macalester before volleyball takes the court at 7 p.m. to host Carleton. Live stats for both games will be available online and updates will be made on Twitter (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five facts to know before tonight's home doubleheader:

2009 – The last time the Wildcats beat the Scots, Avatar and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were the top grossing movies in the world and "Boom Boom Pow" was the top song. St. Kate's has only beaten Macalester once in program history, on October 7, 2009 when the Wildcats beat the Scots 3-2 in overtime.

2015 – In contrast, the last time St. Kate's beat Carleton in volleyball, Jurassic World was the top grossing movie in the world and the new Star Wars movie hadn't been released yet. The Wildcats defeated Carleton 3-1 (25-29, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21) to win their first MIAC match of the season in 2015. The Knights were also one of two MIAC playoff teams St. Kate's beat last season.

3 Iryna Talkachova (Shoreview, Minn. / Shattuck-St. Mary's) has scored three goals this season and all three have been game winners. Two of those three have been scored with less than 20 seconds remaining on the clock.

First – Both Shanee Herd (Alexandria, Minn. / Jefferson) and Carleton's Lucy Stevens lead the MIAC in multiple statistical categories. Herd is the top libero with 380 total digs and an average of 6.33 digs per set. Stevens is one of the best hitters in the conference. Her average of 3.89 kills per set is second only to Saint Mary's Brandi Blattner and her .364 hitting percentage is the best in the MIAC.

2 - This evening is one of two home "doubleheaders" for the soccer and volleyball teams. On October 8, St. Kate's soccer will host St. Olaf at 1 p.m. on St. Kate's field before volleyball takes on Saint Ben's in the Butler Center Gym at 3 p.m.
