WHITEWATER, WIS. – The weather has not been kind to the St. Catherine University soccer team this season. The Wildcats have had two of their past four games cancelled due to thunderstorms and severe weather. On Saturday, the weather finally cooperated and St. Kate's was able to play in its 4 p.m. game against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Unfortunately, the score wasn't quite as nice to the Wildcats as the weather. The No. 13/17 ranked Warhawks scored three early goals in the first half won the game 7-1.
"Everything that could go wrong did go wrong today," soccer head coach
Chris Citowicki commented after the game. "Credit to Whitewater for punishing us for our mistakes."
St. Kate's typically stingy defense struggled against UW-Whitewater's potent offense in the opening minutes of the half. The Warhawks scored on their first shot of the game, putting the Wildcats in a 1-0 deficit at 7:56 in the first half.
Still, despite being in a 1-0 hole, St. Kate's had plenty of time to even the score and potentially take a lead. Unfortunately, Whitewater continued to expose the Wildcats defensive weaknesses, scoring two more goals to take a 3-0 lead at halftime.
St. Kate's made a few lineup changes at the start of the second half, including swapping Talyer Koop (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) for
Shelby Fehringer (Anoka, Minn. / Anoka) in goal. Citowicki also put some of the Wildcats biggest offensive weapons on the field in the hope of cutting down the Warhawks lead with an early goal. Sadly, Whitewater scored two unanswered goals, extending its lead to 5-0 midway through the second half.
St. Kate's did manage to break through with a goal of its own in the second half.
Allie Bird (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to cut the Warhawks lead to 5-1 at 84:59. However, Bird's goal may have been too little too late as Whitewater scored two more goals in the game to hand the Wildcats a 7-1 loss.
"This game was a test of our character." Citowicki commented, knowing the performance against Whitewater did not show what his team is capable of. "I can't want to get pack on the field and prove to everyone that this is not us."
St. Kate's will have a chance to send that message tomorrow when it returns home for a 2 p.m. nonconference game against Elmhurst College.
