No. 17 softball prepares for showdown with No. 20 St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The cold hindered the first top-25 showdown between the St. Catherine University softball team and the University of St. Thomas. Two days later, both schools are ready for take two. Today, the No. 17 ranked Wildcats host the No. 20 Tommies in a rivalry game that may have major implications in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) softball standings.

Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3: 30 p.m. with game two to follow at St. Kate's Field. That leaves plenty of time to read this week's preview and the five facts everyone needs to know before first pitch:

24 – The Wildcats love to score in the second inning and have done so 24 times this season. While the second inning may generate the most run production the team, St. Kate's has also scored 11 runs in the first inning, 21 runs in the third, nine in the fourth, 22 runs in the fifth, 20 runs in the sixth inning, 17 in the seventh, and four in extra innings to score a grand total of 130 runs in 2016.

10 – Senior Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) leads the Wildcats offense in 10 statistical categories this season, including batting average (.456), slugging percentage (.676), on base percentage (.524), and hits (33). Rohr is also one of the top hitters in the MIAC and ranks in the top ten in several of the same categories.

0 – St. Kate's has yet to lose at home this season, while St. Thomas has yet to lose to a MIAC opponent. The Wildcats are perfect at home this season, beating UW-River Falls 7-6 in 13 innings in their home opener on March 29. The Tommies are also perfect against conference opponents this season, sweeping St. Olaf, Augsburg, and Saint Mary's to hold a 6-0 record in MIAC play.

4 – The Wildcats and Tommies have accounted for four of the 12 MIAC Softball Athlete-of-the-Week awards this season. For St. Kate's, sophomore ace Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) has been named Pitcher-of-the-Week twice this season, while Rohr was named MIAC Softball Player-of-the-Week on Monday for her stellar offensive performances against St. Olaf and Bethel. For St. Thomas, first year pitcher Kiersten Anderson-Glass was also named MIAC Pitcher-of-the-Week on March 21.

1.8 – There are, at the most, 1.8 miles separating the St. Kate's and St. Thomas campuses, the shortest distance between two schools in the MIAC. Whether a person takes Cretin to Randolph or Cleveland Avenue straight through, the longest it would take to get from one school to the other is six minutes.

Weather and technology permitting, live stats will be available for both games in the doubleheader. Score updates will also be posted to Twitter at @stkateswildcats.
